Admissions
ELIGIBILITY CRITERION FOR ADMISSION TO PhD/M.Tech (Res) IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
As mentioned in: [admissions@iisc.ac.in] the eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D/M.Tech(Res) program of the Chemical Engineering Department are: BE / B Tech or equivalent degree or M.Sc or equivalent degree in any branch of Science (with Mathematics as a subject at the Bachelor's level). It may be noted that GATE qualification is compulsory for admission to the M.Sc (Engg) program. For the admission to the Ph.D program, qualification in GATE is compulsory for candidates with B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc. The cutoff is GATE score of 500 for General candidates and 400 for SC/ST candidates. NOTE: For candidates applying with an M.E/M.Tech degree, qualification in the GATE exam is not required but it is desirable. If you have a GATE score from previous attempt (e.g., the GATE exam could have been taken before entry into the ME/MTech programme), that is sufficient. Candidates who do not fill up the GATE score in the application form will be assumed to have not taken or qualified in GATE. RESEARCH INTERVIEWS: The interviews are conducted in two stages. A screening committee interviews the candidate for 15-20 minutes on basic mathematics and general chemical engineering principles. To give you an idea of the level of questions, some samples are provided in the following link: [sample questions.pdf] ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The cutoff last year for the interview call is mentioned in [admissions@iisc.ac.in]. The candidates are required to note that the above cutoffs are only a guideline and the cutoff for the GATE score will change depending on the number of candidates applying to the programme.
