Admissions

Admission

Admission to the M.Tech program is in the August semester only. The applications are generally received in March every year. The admission procedure is advertised in all national daily newspapers in January/February every year including details of GATE, which is conducted in February.
Admission to the M.Tech(Res) and PhD program is in the August semester (applications submission in March). Candidates are called for an interview on the basis of their scores in GATE or Joint CSIR-UGC National Entrance Test for JRF or UGC-NET for JRF. The final selection is based on the performance in the interview. Interviews are held in June.

Eligibility

Eligibility criterion for admission to PhD/M.Tech (res) in chemical engineering

As mentioned in www.iisc.ac.in/admissions, the eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D/M.Tech(Res) program of the Chemical Engineering Department are: BE / B Tech or equivalent degree or M.Sc or equivalent degree in any branch of Science (with Mathematics as a subject at the Bachelor’s level).

It may be noted that GATE qualification is compulsory for admission to the M.Sc (Engg) program. For the admission to the Ph.D program, qualification in GATE is compulsory for candidates with B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.

For more information, please visit the IISc Admissions website.

Note: For candidates applying with an M.E/M.Tech degree, qualification in the GATE exam is not required but it is desirable. If you have a GATE score from previous attempt (e.g., the GATE exam could have been taken before entry into the ME/MTech programme), that is sufficient.

Research Interviews

The interviews are conducted in two stages. A screening committee interviews the candidate for 15-20 minutes on basic mathematics and general chemical engineering principles. To deal with large number of applicants, the screening is done with a written test in some admission years. To give you an idea of the level of questions, some samples are provided in the following link:

Sample Questions

If cleared by the screening committee, the candidates are interviewed by a second committee to assess the candidates suitability for admission to the research programme.

Please note that candidates appearing through the external registration program (ERP) are treated on par with regular candidates for interviews and will undergo the two stage interview process outlined above.

Additional
Information

For the cutoff scores from previous years for the interview call, please visit IISc admissions website. The candidates are required to note that the above cutoffs are only a guideline and the cutoff for the GATE score will change depending on the number of candidates applying to the programme.
