Institute organises Open Day every year, and throws its doors open to the public, inviting them to experience its activities and facilities first-hand.
Open Day at IISc features a diverse array of activities across various departments, including live experiments, popular science lectures, scientific demos, and exhibitions. Departments like Aerospace Engineering showcase drone demonstrations, composite material displays, and combustion research, while Biochemistry highlights its centenary with exhibitions on synthetic biology and viral immunology. Bioengineering presents interactive models on drug delivery and cellular mechanics. Other departments like Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering offer hands-on demos, quizzes, and interactive exhibits to engage visitors of all ages in understanding and exploring scientific and technological innovations.
The Chemical Engineering department at IISc’s Open Day features a variety of engaging activities and demos. Visitors can explore DNA origami to see how DNA can be used to create nanoscale structures with potential therapeutic applications. They will also experience an origami microscope demonstration showcasing the wonders of microscopy using fold scopes and real samples. The department will present the SIR model for understanding the spread of infectious diseases and a demonstration of magnetorheological fluids, illustrating their transition between fluid-like and solid-like behavior. Other exhibits include molecular simulation to predict material properties, segregation of particles in granular media, synchronization of pendulums, and the spinning behavior of hydrophobic water droplets. Additionally, a hydraulic-powered robotic arm and interactive models to explain molecular interactions and phase transitions will be displayed.
