Solid surface tension in elasto-capillary systems

It is expected that the deformation of soft materials and/or slender structures will be nontrivially affected by solid surface tension, which makes this problem of much practical interest. While authoritative thermodynamic treatments from the time of Gibbs make the case of solid surface tension clear, debate still persists about how to experimentally measure solid surface tension, how to incorporate it in the mechanics of systems, especially in the presence of elasto-capillarity, and whether solid surface tension will at all change the structure’s deformation and/or stress field.
