The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (eCO2R) is envisioned as one of the most promising ways to close the industrial carbon cycle by producing high value chemicals and fuels using renewable electricity. To date, however, the reaction mechanisms toward the plethora of products are disputed, complicating the search for alternative catalyst materials.
